Daley and Williams win silver!
TOM Daley was forced to settle for silver as China’s dive kings proved a force too far.
Britain’s greatest diver and his 10m synchro partner Noah Williams knew they were going to have to do something special to prevent three-time world champions Lian Junjie and Yang Hao reclaiming the crown Daley and Matty Lee had taken in Tokyo.
And despite a performance 41 points better than in taking world silver behind the Chinese in Doha in February, the Brit duo had to settle for second best again.
Daley and Lee were superb throughout, never faltering as they scored 463.44.
But Lian and Hao recorded the best dive in EVERY round, with six brilliant routines to record a stunning 490.35 and with Canada’s Rylan Wiens and Nathan Zsombor-Murray third.
It still represented a remarkable comeback for Daley, who thought he had walked away from the sport after Tokyo.
He only confirmed his intention to return earlier this year, having been persuaded to change his mind by son Robbie.
Daley has spent his spare time in Paris with his knitting needles, knowing that he and Williams could not afford to drop a single stitch if they were to win.
The reality, though, was that the Chinese could only lose the gold, rather than the Brits winning it.
This time, unlike in Tokyo, there were no Chinese mistakes.
Silver it is for Daley, who now has a full house of Olympic medals after his Tokyo golds and bronzes from Japan, Rio and London.

Brits confirm silver
A fantastic 93.24 confirms at least silver for the Brits.
But the Chinese respond with an impeccable dive to make sure they win gold!
Everything was perfect about that final dive.
Barely a splash as they entered the pool and they've been given 103 on their final dive.
490 overall. Incredible.

Canada secure bronze
The Canadians are delighted after securing bronze - their first ever medal in the 10metres.
They left the door open for Ukraine and Mexico after a slightly conservative final dive.
It would take something huge for Britain to usurp the Chinese in first.

Update from near the halfway point as China pull ahead
Now it’s down to the four choice dives, with the scores going up massively if you get it right. And any mistake being really costly.
Daley and Williams started with an inward three and a half somersault routine, with their lowest tariff of 3.2, the same as the Chinese choice.
To the absolute delight of their coach Jane Figueroa, standing on the side of the pool, they nailed it to score 83.52 and put the heat on the leaders.
But Lian and Yang did not falter, scoring 85.44 to nudge further ahead, with the Canadians five points behind the Brits in third.

Latest after first dives
Loads of Union Jacks at the far end of the pools - the water polo pitch is also here - from the platform, with Daley and Williams given a raucous welcome as their names were announced.
They started well, too, an inward one and a half somersault worth 53.40 points, level with Canada’s Rylan Wiens and Nathan Zsombor-Murray and better than they had done in Doha.
But the Chinese responded with the best dive of the opening round, perfect timing worth 56.40. Game on.
