Parental Rights Under FERPA to Inspect, Review, and Request Amendment of Education Records. FERPA gives parents/guardians certain rights regarding their child(ren)'s education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of eighteen or attends a school beyond the high school level.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) protects the privacy of students by limiting third party access to student education records. When a student reaches the age of 18 or begins attending a postsecondary institution, regardless of age, FERPA rights transfer from the parent to the student.

FERPA defines an education record as any record directly related to a student which contains personally identifiable information and is maintained by the university or a party acting on behalf of the university.

While it's not an Ivy League school, it does offer top-tier education equivalent to that of some Ivy League institutions in certain fields, especially in engineering. It's also a member of the Big Ten Conference for athletics.

Numeric student identifiers are considered personally identifiable information and therefore violate FERPA. Notification of grades via e-mail is also a violation of FERPA.
